First Aid Instruction
The club takes the subject of first aid training very seriously. It is essential that the teaching of first aid is carried out in conjunction with the teaching of lifesaving and lifeguarding.
Because most of our training is based on rescuing techniques in or around water, we place a strong emphasis on the teaching of resuscitation.
Our first aid instruction is configured to match the range of lifesaving and lifeguarding awards.
The younger members who are training for the range of Rookie lifesaving awards are taught simple casualty care and rescue breathing (mouth to mouth, or mouth to nose resuscitation).
The 'Bronze Medallion', the 'Award of Merit'', and the 'Distinction' awards require more comprehensive first aid training. Included in the syllabus are: first aid treatment for various medical conditions, treatment for the results of accidents (e.g. bleeding, fractures etc.), and advanced resuscitation techniques. The training is based on the RLSS publication 'Life Support'.
We anticipate that in the near future that we will be able to teach extended life support techniques. This will include the use of defibrillators, oxygen therapy and advanced airway management.
We have trainers with the following qualifications:
Lifesaving Trainer Assessor
Lifeguard Trainer Assessor
First Aid at Work Teacher and Examiner.
